SCIENCE
SECTION OF KEGALU BALIKA VIDYALAYA
The foundation stone of our college science section was laid in 1960 by Mrs. Malani Wijesinghe who was the sectional head at the same period.
In the beginning, lack of laboratory facilities and teaching science in English medium by Tamil teachers became an obstacle for students in gaining proficiency in science subjects.
It can be assumed that the practical and written tests also were effected due to this reason.
In 1969, teaching of Biology and Physics in Sinhala medium was begun. As in the other schools this made a revolution in our science section. During this period there was a lack of teachers for Physics and Chemistry. Miss. J. Sharma who was the sectional head, involved Mrs. A.I.M.Boyagama in teaching activities of our school as a remedy for the above mentioned problem. She was a teacher of Kegalu Vidyalaya. Mrs. Airini Muthunayake a former principle worked for the success of the science section and uplifted the prestige of Kegalu Balika. In 1970 a new two storeyed building was constructed with the aid of parents.
Miss. Dharmakanthi Hettiarachchi was the first science student to be selected to the university in 1972 giving a great honour to the school. In 1973 Miss. Mangalika Munidasa and Miss. Dayanthi Abeywickrama were the first students to be selected to the medical faculty and engineering faculty respectively.
